when you stop you are supposed to plant one foot and sorta lean in with the other.the foot that you plant is the one that your not using to lean on.If you arent planting your foot(setting it firmly on the ice)yes your breaking position will look like an upside down v.If you want a more detailed description or you want to see examples i would suggest either going to the library and requesting a skating video or asking even one of your teamates to give you a few pointers.

I know this is an old post, but I just got the two skate stop wired and will write about it. I used the old "snowplow" skiing stop technique to learn how my skates ride the ice. I loaded 80% of my weight on my inside skate, then weighted the outside and found the place where it is "floating" between inside and outside edges. Then I slowly made the vee that you are talking about and then transfered the weight to the outside. Gradually as the muscles got stronger I could make the transfer quicker and more gracefully. Now I can do it on both sides without even thinking about it. Practice, practice, practice.

Does it really matter how high you spray btw?

I can stop fine but the ice only goes max 2ft off the ground?!

Not at all. Typically, the higher spray is caused my a more abrupt stop or a lower lean angle with your leading foot. As long as you are stopping quickly, and fast enough for your league and playing style.....the spray is nothing more than bragging rights.
