Default NHL escrow???

Recently read book by Georges Laraque and he mentions that players pay about 10% of their gross revenue to the NHL escrow. Any financial gurus out there know what this is? Does it go to their retirement fund, or where does this money go? Just curious. It looks like this money is taken out AFTER taxes are taken out. Is this just a Canadian law, or is it taken out of all players salaries? I know Canadian taxes are very high and maybe this is a good example of this.

Anybody ever heard of this? Maybe I should e-mail Georges at vegan.com. He is a pretty big dude and to go vegetarian is a pretty big change. Wonder how many lbs. he has lost. Don't think this would be a good idea if he was still playing.
